Overview
Depths of Sorcery is a magical swimming game. You dive through themed zones, catch and research fish, and gain magical powers from them.
What I did
I covered a lot of the game. I built the fish swimming: after researching how fish move, I used 2D boids so fish stick to their schools and realistically avoid the player.
This is where I first experimented with dynamic grass and environment design. I designed the entire map and decorated it with the assets I was given. I asked for a single colour of seagrass so I could vary its colour and size in code and bunch it together naturally, then used different colours to set the mood of each area, such as red grass in the lava zone and purple in the dead zone. To place it, I built a Line2D image-buncher mesh placer that scatters grass along any line drawn in the level.
I also merged everyone's work and made sure it all ran together, did all of the particle effects and the lighting, and added much of the polish and player feedback: smooth lerped rotation when swimming and attacking, and flash indicators on items. The fish tank was my idea too: the fish you've researched swim around in it, which is satisfying to watch.
