Overview

Mt Tmolus was a completely new kind of environment for me: I'd never built an outdoor scene this large, especially with fully textured terrain.

What I did

The terrain was the hardest part to set up. Unity's built-in terrain kept it optimised, and I still made sure the grass used optimised planes.

I added subsurface scattering, falling-leaf particles and wet and snow textures, and lit the walking route so it stays clear and easy to follow. It was built in a short time, so the trees are a little repetitive and I'd have liked more variation there, but the grass varies, and you can see the difference it makes. For my first environment, I'm really proud of how it looks.

What I learned

A lot about optimising large environments, and about environment design that makes players want to walk through it.

I also thought hard about immersion: does the player actually feel like they're in a forest? It was a really useful assignment, and I'm glad I did it.
