Overview
Toxo is an archery hunting game set in a forest. Its core mechanic is gap shooting: you aim with the tip of the arrow and judge the gap to your target, the way archers do in real life. There's no crosshair, and the UI is kept to a minimum.
What I did
I'm building Toxo solo in Godot and Blender. I've done archery in real life, and I've used that experience to shape how aiming feels. I'm also bringing together features I built for my university assignments and importing them into the game.
One breakthrough was how arrows land: they stick halfway into enemies, but only by the tip in the environment. It took a while to work out, because I was using ragdoll colliders and there's very little Godot documentation on ragdolls. Once I figured it out, it worked like butter and the game improved immensely. Most of the later footage shows ragdolls reacting naturally to headshots.
What I learned
How to build my own vision. Toxo is my first big project outside university, and it's pushed me out of my comfort zone.
I also learned to block out features early. Luckily, several of my assignments matched features the game needed.
